“We are homesick most for the places we have never known” – Carson McCullers

Conceived and created by the Virginia-based studio Mondial, the short film follows an isolated teen (Zach Rand) in and out of his subconscious, navigating his own feelings of intense yearning and unappeased desire. Isolation’s effect on the heart and mind can sometimes bring about a type of nostalgia in reverse: a fondness for a reality we’ve not yet experienced. The concept serves as an offering to the soundtrack’s plea: how can love can grow from pain?

Over the last decade, producer and engineer Dean Hurley’s day job has been supervising all of director David Lynch’s sonic endeavors; collaborating extensively with Lynch on the sound design and music for his commercial work, film work, and albums…producing tracks for Lykke Li, Karen O, Zola Jesus and others. ’Days of Thunder & Rain’ is his first solo effort; a whiskey-soaked narrative told through soul fragments, youtube samples, and synth pads from Hans Zimmer’s 90’s soundtrack masterpiece Days of Thunder. The resulting 11 tracks catalog a doomed relationship’s arc from the initial desires for it to last forever…to the worry, deceit, pleads, separation, collapse and pain of it’s eventual absence. “I wanted to craft a cohesive narrative and aesthetic of that specific bitter-sweet plea that’s such a technicolor emotion in so many relationships,” Hurley states. The impetus for the album, however, didn’t come from a break up, but a relationship to life as a concept: “Life is a fully multi-dimensional love: love and pain in the same breath…we’re constantly saying goodbye to the past while reconciling emotions for the future…all the while knowing that there is an inevitable end.”
